Audience

The audience was a rhetorical element that I severely underestimated the importance of. I’ve retained the same definition regarding the audience, however, my approach to writing the audience has changed. The audience is the person you intend to write to while considering their background, education, and knowledge of the subject at hand. To help establish this information, we were given an audience analysis sheet to help organize the information needed about the audience as shown in figure 1.

To show the evolution of my writing about the audience, let us look at my technical description draft abstract. My tech description focuses on the inner and outer components of the Lufkin 25′ tape measure. Originally, my group and I stated that the audience was directed to structural civil engineers. However, this wasn’t specific enough. Structural engineers can deal with several aspects of buildings that won’t need a tape measure and would rather use a yard/meter stick. Therefore, in my final draft, I have specifically stated that the Lufkin 25′ tape measure was meant for structural civil engineers dealing with steel framing and drop ceiling grids. This narrows down the audience who are truly looking for a portable and compact tape measure.
