When I first thought about purpose, the immediate thought is that our goal is to inform, persuade, or entertain the reader. However, I quickly realized that there is more to the meaning of purpose. To establish a true purpose, I have to set a base as to what I want to accomplish in my writing and translate it into an articulate form for the reader. Whether it would be to “inform, persuade, or entertain,” I must include the right details and evidence to back up the importance of the writing. A good example of my change in writing the purpose is through my “memo” assignment.
My memo discussed the want to remove the mask mandate when entering the campus. My group and I felt that masks weren’t necessary considering the fact that all students have done the regulations required such as a vaccine, cleared4 pass, and social distancing. However, as shown in figure 1, my purpose wasn’t entirely clear. In the last sentence, I drive away from the purpose and didn’t specifically state the purpose. I didn’t state if I was talking about entering the campus or the virus in general. Nonetheless, I was able to make the necessary adjustments by specifically stating the issue of the mask mandate around our campus.
